About me

I’ve been providing high-quality language services for 25 years. I love what I do and and I came to do it because I first fell for Spain, its people, history and culture, and, of course, Spanish – so much so that Spain has been my home for virtually the whole of my adult life. I also love Portugal and Portuguese and make regular trips across the border.

My initial contact with the profession was in the late 1990s. Staff I taught at a leading Spanish daily would ask me to help them with English translations related to the work they were doing. I found I relished the challenge of finding the right words to capture the idea they were trying to convey. I quickly realised that this was the job for me. It was satisfying; it gave me a similar sense of fulfillment to the one I found when learning Spanish. And such a dynamic environment clearly gave me a leg up.

From lending a hand with informal requests, I transitioned into proper assignments. The real breakthrough came when I joined BBC Monitoring as a Spanish-to-English linguist, working remotely. It was the best of two worlds: languages and current affairs. The ongoing, on-the-job training I received from the staff in the UK over the years was invaluable, and my time there turned out to be a springboard to more, equally interesting, collaborations.

My experience

I’ve learned and perfected my skills working with government-linked organisations in the UK and the US, major Spanish media outlets, prestigious think tanks in Madrid and Barcelona, and research institutions in Europe. I’ve spent years translating, summarising and monitoring political, economic and social developments in Spain and Portugal, capturing media narratives and tracking how news outlets in the two countries view the world. I translate, copyedit and proofread expert research and analysis on trends shaping international relations and how they affect policymaking in Spain, the EU and globally, helping to reach English-speaking audiences.

My passions

I’m passionate about current affairs in general, and I’m particularly drawn to how geopolitics impacts:

human rights

the climate crisis

migration

the influence of new technologies on society

But that’s not all

I work on sports too (I’m mad about football and cycling), as well as culture, and feel very much at home in those spaces.

I love the work I do because I love languages, but a big plus is that it keeps me aware and engaged with what’s happening in the world. And I’m committed to my task, to finding the right voice and style to suit your text in English. I’m a perfectionist.

I also love being outdoors, whether that’s riding my bike, swimming in the Atlantic or walking the dog along the beaches and through the woods near home.

Pillars of my work

Commitment

On-time delivery

Accuracy

Respecting the essence of the original voice

I offer a human, bespoke service.

The work will be done by me unless I specifically say otherwise.
