Academia, research and outreach

For twenty years now I’ve been helping think tanks in Madrid and Barcelona convey their ideas to the English-speaking public.

I translate and copyedit papers, reports, monographs, abstracts and other analysis.

The topics are broad, spanning global geopolitics and local initiatives.

They might cover changes in the international political landscape, the transformation of the European Union and its place in the world, Spain’s role in the bloc or how subnational levels of government are addressing key policy challenges.

They could focus on migration, development, the climate crisis, the impact of artificial intelligence, terrorism, armed conflicts, peacebuilding, elections or health care, to name just a few.

I translate and copyedit research and reports on the climate, human rights, equal treatment and non-discrimination.

That can take in EU law in these areas and its implementation by the member states.

Or it could focus on violence against women, disability, housing rights, social exclusion or disaster-resistant homes.

Open source intelligence

I spent over a decade as an independent contractor in support of the US government’s open-source intelligence body.

I selected, translated, machine translation post-edited and summarised Spanish and Portuguese media output.

Among the many topics covered: terrorism, human rights, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the energy crisis, domestic political stability, financial and economic crises, and migration.

BBC Monitoring

I worked for ten years supporting BBC Monitoring’s mission to provide essential media insight, again working as an independent contractor.

I tracked, translated and summarised the view from Spain’s main news outlets.

The subjects covered included: terrorism, domestic political stability, migration, conflict in the Middle East, arms control, human rights.

Conferences and business meetings

I’ve provided interpreting services in Spanish settings that range from United Nations and European Union events to notaries, taking in meetings to assist companies pursuing business opportunities.

It's about communicating information accurately and engagingly, while respecting the original voice.
